Women in hip-hop celebrate Hype's fabulous fiftieth

To celebrate Hype's 50th issue, the hip-hop publication includes its first 'Women in Hip Hop' supplement, which is a milestone, including the first all-female Hype CD to celebrate women's month.

"The female voice in the culture is largely overshadowed by significant male impact and therefore women are the minority in hip-hop from an artist's point of view. So this supplement was a way to give the power to women to celebrate their achievements and successes," says editor Simone Harris.

At 96 pages, it is the magazine's largest issue and it features a 50s theme - 50 best mix tapes, 50 best South African MCs, 50 epic moments in hip hop, 50 most important songs and 50 greatest albums of all time. The top 50 SA rappers list is a talking point as reportedly it has never been done before and because every rapper believes they are the best, so the criteria and rating system were questioned.

The magazine is encouraging fans to tweet the women's supplement to encourage the artists @HypeMagazineSA.
