Power billboard back in the limelight

Net#work BBDO's Nedbank solar power billboard has been back in the limelight this month– it was recently honoured for its innovation at the 2007 iHero Awards. Against some tough competition, it won first prize in the iBusiness category which celebrates innovators or innovations within the corporate sector.

It is the difference that this unique billboard is making in the lives of school children – as it powers up a kitchen at an Alexander Township School – that caught the attention of the judges.

Net#work COO Clinton Mitri says, “This was the first time Net#work has stretched itself to entering an award of this nature. And as we continue to break out of the confines of traditional advertising and find innovative ways to build our client's brands, it certainly won't be the last.”

The iHero Awards was created by Axius Publishing some five years ago to reward those who are making a positive contribution to South African society. The awards have given birth to a much greater campaign called innovationTOWN, a social, entrepreneurial model and collaborative commercial initiative that is striving to reposition SA as an innovative country. One of its most important tasks undertaken is to show people that innovation is more than a product or a process, but also an attitude.

The Nedbank winning billboard, along with all the other winners, is exhibited at Johannesburg's Sci-bono Discovery Centre.
