    Media, museums, merriment - 2010 beckons

    Fans can pick up the latest news, views and scores on various dedicated radio spots with 94.7, Kfm and 5FM and even CNN getting in on the act. For the more culturally minded tourist, The Market and Nelson Mandela Museums and shows around South Africa offer an introspective on the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the peace heritage of the country. Finally, as fans flock to fan parks, don't forget to buy souvenirs that add to the economic growth of South Africa and not foreign manufacturers.

    Photo essay tracks Cup impact

    The Market Photo Workshop's initiative 'The World Cup Rural and Urban Photo Diary', aims to reveal marginal narratives within the greater international event of the World Cup. One of its highlights is the partnership between the workshop and French daily newspaper, Le Monde. Local photographers' images will be featured in the newspaper as either photo essays or stand-alone images. This collaboration will cast an international eye on alternative perspectives of South Africa during the Soccer World Cup.

    Produced in association with Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, Anglo Gold Ashanti, Le Monde, National Arts Council, Getty Images, Open Society Foundation, Newtown Improvement District and the Gauteng provincial government, the free show will run from 11 June - 15 July 2010.

    Contributing photographers, made up mostly of photojournalism and documentary photography students and Market photo workshop alumni will cast light on personal, political, social and conceptual developments across the country, exploring the different ways in which individuals and communities - in both rural and urban areas - interpret this historic moment as it impacts the larger context of the national memory and identity.

    Mandela shows underline peace, hope

    The Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha and Qunu has received approximately R6 million in funding from the National Department of Arts and Culture to proliferate Nelson Mandela's message of peace and hope to the world during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The exhibitions will be on display until after Mandela's 92nd birthday on July 18. They would thereafter move to other South African heritage and educational institutions. A large version of the exhibition is on display at the Nelson Mandela Museum's Bhunga building site in Mthatha, along with another acclaimed installation, The Meaning of Mandela.

    An important exhibition entitled 'Mandela and Luthuli: In Conversation', a collaboration between the Nelson Mandela Museum and the Chief Albert Luthuli Museum in Stanger, is to be launched at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, on 25 June.

    Satellite 'Mandela and Luthuli: In Conversation' exhibits are to be mounted at venues including the Nelson Mandela Gateway in Cape Town, Bloemfontein Museum and at the Polokwane and King Shaka Airports. The museum's outreach programme will also embrace Sandton and various other South African airports and public spaces.

    Cape Town launch parade

    The official 2010 FIFA World Cup launch parade in Cape Town starts at the City Hall on 10 June at 6pm and will continue for approximately three hours. The fan fest, which includes local and international celebrities, will progress up Adderley Street and end in the Grand Parade area. The parade will include the Muppets from Takalani Sesame, which will receive worldwide coverage.

    The radio stations, 94.7 Highveld Stereo and 94.5 Kfm will simulcast The Scoop Xtra Time across the two stations in Johannesburg and Cape Town from 7-10pm every weekday night. Patrick Hayworth, in the Johannesburg studio, will help listeners to figure out who's who, how it all works and what's happening when and where and he will be joined by co-host Stacey Norman, based in Cape Town, who will bring listeners the who-saw-whom, what they were wearing and where they were spotted. The show will also post the feed into 'The Scoop' feature on the Highveld website.

    5FM is giving away one hundred and fifty five prizes in 31 days culminating in the ultimate prize of 31 return flights to each of the countries participating in the World Cup. In addition, the station will be visiting Fan Fests around the country, hosting Match your Match activations where make-up artists will flag your face free and exciting spot prizes will be up for grabs. It is also planning a Youth Day activation involving five-a-side soccer games where participating kids will get to play against their favourite DJ's. The full events calendar is on the website.

    International channel tracks South Africa on and off the pitch

    CNN has created a global fan zone to unite and inform its sport-enthusiastic audience across CNN International, CNN.com, CNN iReport and CNN en Español. From Soccer City to Fan Park, the channel will have a team of eight correspondents in South Africa reporting live and delivering comprehensive coverage including match results, logistics and key storylines to viewers around the world. These are Pedro Pinto, Alex Thomas, Michael Holmes, Isha Sesay, Robyn Curnow, Nkepile Mabuse, Diego Bustos and David McKenzie.

    McKenzie will spend the entire month travelling around South Africa in a Winnebago and taking the pulse of the host country. As part of CNN's Team Winnebago, McKenzie will help tell the story of the World Cup through the voices of South Africa. From Cape Town to Graaff Reinet and Qunu to Soweto, Team Winnebago will cover more than 3 000 kilometres of highway, dusty tracks and snow-capped mountains during this month-long road trip. Users will be able to track McKenzie's journey through an interactive map that will showcase progress as well as the special reports filed from the road. In addition, McKenzie will tweet http://twitter.com/McKenzieCNN about the places he has visited and where Team Winnebago will go next.

    Aaron Mokoena will file exclusive video diaries and when appropriate, contribute exclusively to the network as a World Cup analyst. Ahead of the tournament Mokoena, who is Bafana Bafana's most capped player, will be armed with a CNN flip cam so that he can provide viewers and users with an inside view of the Cup. These video diaries will be featured on www.cnn.com/worldcup.

    Fan parks, stadiums support charity

    Hyundai Parks offer free entrance in Johannesburg at the Italian Club, Bedfordview and in Durban at Suncoast Casino to registered fans and a R20 entrance fee in Cape Town at the V&A Waterfront to view all the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches on a massive 40m2 screen. Fans will also stand a chance to be Fan of The Match or win last minute tickets and be whisked off to the stadium to see the game live in the Hyundai Fan Van.

    Nashua Mobile will be handing out beaded soccer balls and flag charms at the MTN Fan Parks as part of its Fly the Flag campaign. The company placed its orders for over 6 000 items with a Pretoria-based charity, namely Woman Against Rape (WAR) and another collective of bead workers, in a bid to support communities and people that are striving to improve themselves. The campaign is supported by South African celebrities such as Nicole Flint (Miss RSA), John Smit, David Tlale, Rebecca Malope, Natalie du Toit and Arno Carstens.
