Workshop on reporting xenophobia

Media Monitoring Africa (MMA), in partnership with the South African Editors Forum, Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), is holding a one-day stakeholder workshop and strategy meeting: 'Reporting on Race, Racism, Migrants and Xenophobia in the Community/Small Commercial Media' in Johannesburg on 4 June.

As part of its Race, Xenophobia and Ethnicity programme, Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) has been undertaking a research study, funded by the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), into the representation of race, racism, migrants, and xenophobia in the community and small commercial media.

This has involved monitoring 46 newspapers across 5 provinces in South Africa, as well as facilitating a series of focus groups with non-governmental and community based organisations, and MMA's monitors, to find out their views on community media coverage.

MMA is holding a Workshop and Strategy Meeting, in partnership with South African Editors Forum, Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Media Development and Diversity Agency, for stakeholders in the community/small commercial media, in order to:

  • highlight the importance of reviewing community/small commercial media coverage of race, racism, migrants and xenophobia in South Africa;
  • raise awareness about the research findings;
  • hear responses from stakeholders on the findings;
  • clarify role, commitment, and responsibilities of community/small commercial media in addressing racism and xenophobia.
  • develop key elements to be included in draft guidelines on reporting on race, racism, migrants and xenophobia;

  • seek ways forward to promote equality, non-discrimination and good relations between people from different so-called groups (focusing on race, ethnicity, and nationality), and challenge stereotypes, myths and misconceptions.

The workshop and strategy meeting will include presentations from experts, guided discussions, and clear outcomes.
