World AIDS Day

Today, 1st December, marks the 20th World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day was established by the World Health Organisation in 1998 to provide governments, national AIDS programs, faith organisations, community organisations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.

As the world commemorates this day, let us (MDDA) join forces with the rest of South Africans in remembering our loved ones lost to the disease and raise awareness by observing the day, recommitting ourselves to the fight to drive back the devastating HIV/Aids pandemic, which continues to sweep through the country, claiming thousands of lives. Let us all take a minute and bow our heads in memory of all those who left us in our families, communities and the country due to AIDS and AIDS-related HIV infections, those affected and infected. Let us join the campaign on voluntary HIV counselling and testing from today the 1 December. This year's World AIDS Day theme is “I am responsible, we are responsible, South Africa is responsible”. The Minster of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, says the level of HIV/Aids is a national emergency, with infections at 23 times the global average. Let us therefore unite and support the different initiatives aimed at combatting the pandemic that has to date affected millions of people.

World AIDS Day is an opportunity to be inspired to respect and protect the health and wellbeing of ourselves and those around us through knowledge, action and consideration. In so doing, we need to encourage a work space free of discrimination and stereotyping but supportive and loving. Let us work towards an “HIV Positive” workplace, with a positive attitude, lifestyle, friendly environment and approach. Finally, let us use this day to inspire us to start or continue eat healthy and living a healthy lifestyle. Let us give strength to all people living with HIV, commit ourselves to giving them support and love.

Listen to the President Zuma's announcement at 11h00.

Kind Regards
