Gauteng pub wins British grub award

A pub in Muldersdrift has won a newspaper award for having the finest British pub grub outside the United Kingdom, the Sunday Times reported.

"Last week I got an e-mail from The Telegraph, saying: 'Congratulations, you have won an award as the best restaurant," said Steve Gilroy, the Irish-born owner of Gilroy's Brewery, in Muldersdrift.

His restaurant won the Daily Telegraph's 2012 Best of British Award, an honour it also scooped in 2010.

"I am so grateful to them for doing this. It is a gift from the Lord," said Gilroy, who has lived in South Africa since 1970 and started the pub in 2008.

The award was decided by an on-line poll, and Gilroy received the top number of nominations for his menu which includes home-brewed beer, pies, fish and chips and bangers and mash.

Gilroy told the Sunday Times he played a "huge part" in providing entertainment at his pub.

"I even do poetry for my guests and have done about 400 [poems] to date. But I miss [expelled African National Congress Youth League president] Julius Malema -- he was a huge gift to my poetry," he added.
