When are you happiest?

When I’m singing. It’s the only time where nothing else matters but what's happening at that moment.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?

Creating something completely new and authentic – using stories I’ve lived through.

What drives you: ego or humility?

Humility drives me all the way. It’s the only way to grow.
I try my best to live my life understanding that we never stop learning and that there's always room for improvement. Makes the disappointments easier to handle and the achievements that much more rewarding.

Any funny moments on stage?

I was busking at the V&A Waterfront one day and this random person wearing a red and green onesie came up to me and started singing at me with finger cymbals dancing to his own rhythm, having the time of his life. I could not stop laughing while trying to get through the song.

What is your most treasured possession?

My box of souvenirs I have hidden in my cupboard. I usually take something small that I can fit into a shoebox from every influential gig or experience I’ve had.

It’s your round, what are you drinking?

Vodka and cranberry or Savannah Dry.

What makes you stand out?

I think my voice stands out the most. As an acoustic musician, it's just my voice, my guitar and the story I’m telling.

Nicknames?

Growing up my friends called me Micky and some family members called me Micky Mouse, which is longer than my actual name but okay. Now it varies from Mikaykay to Micky to Mixi or Caela – I go by many names.

If you were not a musician what would you do?

I would be a multimedia designer because that’s what I studied after matric.

Pick five words to describe yourself?

Kind-hearted, fun, passionate, loving, daring.

What is your favourite word?

“Lief”.

Favourite fashion garment?

I love jerseys.

Give us some real proper slang and what it means.

“Dala what you must”, means do what you have to.

Your greatest achievement?

I have a few achievements, but the most recent one is singing alongside Craig Lucas.

What is your fear?

I fear failure.

On stage, I tend to?

Close my eyes and get a little too lost.

Do you do charity work and, if you do, what do you do?

I’ve played for a few cancer awareness charity events and sung on a global warming awareness song that brought singers from around the world together in one song called “Drops of Rain”.

Wishes and dreams?

I dream about one day being able to help people with my music.
