Thunee is a popular trick-taking card game of the jack–nine family that originated in Durban. Named after the Tamil word for water, it is believed the game was developed by the first indentured Indian labourers. Variations of the game are found in India and Mauritius, as well as in other communities in South Africa.
Highly popular as a family game, thunee is enjoyed by both young and older generations in the Indian community. Every year, some 200 thunee players from around KZN and Johannesburg take part in the tournament at Wild Coast Sun.
This year’s event has a share of more than R50 000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. Discounted rates for accommodation are available for players only, twin room R1612 bed and breakfast. For bookings and further details, contact event organiser Anandh Perumal on 083 609 8168.
